Dampers just help save you money. It can save as much as $100 a year. Dampers are designed to cut the airflow off between the inside and outside of your home saving you money on heating and cooling cost. Even if you have an existing damper in your fireplace it may not fit tightly enough to stop the airflow. Top mounted dampers are by far the best choice.

A top mounted damper can be installed in an existing masonry fireplace. The unit is placed on the outside of your chimney at the top. The low profile almost makes it barely noticeable from the outside. A stainless steel cable is dropped down through the flue and the handle is attached to the inside wall of the firebox. There is no doubt if it is open or closed by a quick glance of the handle. The damper also takes the place of a chimney cap because when closed it shed water with a watertight seal and keeps out the animals. If you are a heavy user of you fireplace a damper/cap combination can be installed to give you maximum protection while you enjoy your fireplace.
