Most people keep the firewood out in the open uncovered year round. This allows for the wood to stay wet and the rotting process to begin. As you build a fire you will notice a great deal of smoke, popping, and hissing noises and the fire will not be as hot. This is a good sign that the chimney will need to be cleaned more often than if the wood is kept dry.
The ideal situation protects the wood and keeps it dry, usually under a large covered area which allows for good air circulation to prevent mildew and pests from damaging the wood. Keep it away from the house due to insects and fire safety but accessable enough for convenience.
